Diamond to -tin phase transition in Si within diffusion quantum Monte Carlo

چکیده
We have studied the diamond to -tin phase transition in Si using diffusion quantum Monte Carlo DMC methods. Slater-Jastrow-backflow trial wave functions give lower DMC energies than Slater-Jastrow ones, and backflow slightly favors the -tin phase with respect to the diamond phase. We have investigated the changes in the equation of state that result from the use of different pseudopotentials, the inclusion of either zero-point motion or finite-temperature vibrations, and the application of corrections for finite-size effects. Our tests indicate that the choice of pseudopotential can significantly affect the equation of state. Using a Dirac-Fock pseudopotential leads to an overestimation of the transition pressure but an empirical pseudopotential designed for use in correlated calculations gives a transition pressure in quite good agreement with experiment.

Diamond and b-tin structures of Si studied with quantum Monte Carlo calculations
We have used diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) calculations to study the pressure-induced phase transition from the diamond to b-tin structure in silicon. The calculations employ the pseudopotential technique and systematically improvable B-spline basis sets. We show that in order to achieve a precision of 1 GPa in the transition pressure the noncanceling errors in the energies of the two str...
متن کاملMinimum principles and level splitting in quantum Monte Carlo excitation energies: Application to diamond
A diffusion and variational quantum Monte Carlo ~DMC and VMC! study of excitation energies in diamond is reported. Good agreement is found between the DMC results and results from the GW approximation and, where available, with experiment. A group theoretical analysis is provided of the level splittings arising from the use of arbitrary degenerate single-particle orbitals in the construction of...

Fixed-node diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) calculations of the ground and excited state energetics of the neutral vacancy defect in diamond are reported. The multiplet structure of the defect is modeled using guiding wave functions of the Slater-Jastrow type with symmetrized multideterminant Slater parts. For the ground state we obtain the 1E state in agreement with experiment. The calculat...

We have extended previous formulations of the wavepacket molecular dynamics (WPMD) by implementing full antisymmetrization for the electron-electron interaction and by introducing approximate Bloch waves to account for the periodic continuation of the simulation box. The improved antisymmetrization leads to a modified volume element in the Monte-Carlo (MC) sampling which serves to limit an unph...

– We present a numerical study of magnetic phases of the 2D electron gas near freezing. The calculations are performed by diffusion Monte Carlo in the fixed node approximation. At variance with the 3D case we find no evidence for the stability of a partially polarized phase. With plane wave nodes in the trial function, the polarization transition takes place at rs = 20, whereas the best availab...
